Betsy brings a unique and diverse background to The Piedmont School & John Yowell Academy, where she teaches English and History with a deep commitment to meeting each student where they are and empowering them with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. She holds dual bachelor's degrees in English and History from Bradley University, a Juris Doctor from Washington University School of Law, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from UNC Greensboro. After working as a Public Defense Attorney in Missouri for ten years, Betsy discovered her true calling in education while teaching undergraduate law courses in criminal and Constitutional law. Her transition from the courtroom to the classroom was driven by her passion for helping students develop the critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and communication skills essential for success in any field.

Following more than a decade in higher education and experience as a long-term substitute teacher, she earned her Master of Arts in Teaching in 2024 to become a certified full-time secondary educator. Betsy's teaching philosophy centers on recognizing that every student brings unique strengths, experiences, and learning styles to the classroom. She leverages her legal background and interdisciplinary expertise to create learning experiences that help students build confidence in their abilities while developing strong critical thinking abilities, effective communication skills, and the adaptability to succeed in whatever path they choose.

Outside the classroom, Betsy is married to Quinten and is the proud mother of Iris, a sophomore in high school who is a talented musician. Her diverse professional journey has reinforced her belief in the power of lifelong learning and the importance of nurturing each student's potential to make meaningful contributions to the world.
