The Piedmont School is proud to host its 3rd Annual Educators Workshop. As before this is a free workshop for area educators (open to public, private, and charter schools). The workshop is led by several faculty and administrative members of The Piedmont School. 

Date: Monday February 5, 2018

Time: Registration and Breakfast will run 7:30am-8:00am. The workshop and breakout sessions will run from 8:00am-1:00pm and will include lunch.

NEW FORMAT: 

This year we will be offering a new format that includes breakout sessions. There are 6 available sessions and registrants will be able to choose 3 out of the 6 to attend. There are also two group led sessions that all registrants will attend. Please read session descriptions below and register for 3 out of the 6 breakout sessions.

Morning-

An Overview of Learning Differences and What Is Important in an Educational Evaluation? 

Led by: Jennifer Kelly, Upper School Head 

This whole group session will give a brief overview into the world of learning differences. Explanations of the many common learning differences you may see in your classrooms and examples of what to look for will be shared. Information about the highlights of a psychological/educational evaluation and what are the important parts to read and understand for you as teachers will also be shared. 

Executive Functioning: What Does It Mean To Educators? 

Led By: Patricia Palmer 

A working definition of executive functioning and its implications in the classroom. Participants will gain knowledge and strategies to use with many types of students of all age ranges.  

Afternoon- 

How Do You Social? Social Media Safety, Apps To Know, and How It Affects Your Schools and Classrooms. 

Led by: Kori Mackall, Director of Communications 

A presentation and round table type discussion on the power of social media in our schools and classrooms- the good, the bad, the ugly and even the necessity in today's classrooms/schools. Tips and ideas will be collaboratively shared. Think about the social media accounts (if any) that your school uses and how they are used- and who they are geared toward. We will also discuss apps students are using and how they may impact the dynamics of your classroom (even if they aren't using them on campus- you may still see the repercussions!).

Promoting Student Engagement Through Active Reading Strategies 

Led by: Kelli Saenz

Are your students disengaged? Are they tuned out when you are leading a discussion about a text? Good readers make connections, visualize, infer, and ask questions. Our struggling readers, on the other hand, are not so automatic with these skills. In this session, we will discuss ways to equip students with the comprehension skills and strategies necessary for understanding both fiction and nonfiction texts. The goal is to provide tips that will be helpful for teachers of Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science.

Seeing Colors Through Cross-curricular Differentiation

Led by: Leigh Anne Wilkinson

In the early 1920’s, Americans gathered around small boxes that projected a picture image through tubes. How exciting! As time went on, these boxes, known as televisions, developed more capabilities to keep their audiences engaged. One of those developments was the use of color. Not unlike the television audience, our students need to be engaged in our classes as well. By using color in our presentations and execution, we are able to help students organize learning while teaching process. Through this session you will learn tricks and tools to organize learning with color for all subjects and grade levels.

EMS! How to Help Struggling Students: Explicit, Multi-Sensory & Strategic Strategies for Struggling Elementary Students. 

Led by: Jon Wallace

Have a class full of mixed-ability students and not sure how to get the best gain results? In this session we will discuss research-based strategies that are proven to work. "EMS" or explicit, multi-sensory and strategic teaching strategies will be discussed for both mathematics and ELA in grades K-5. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to implement EMS in a mixed-ability classroom as well as specific examples that they can start using immediately.

Worry, Anger, and Impulsivity   ...Oh My! 

Led by: Deneane Davis, Lower School Head & Melissa Linn, School Counselor 

Do you have that one student (or more) that is reluctant, unmotivated or full of anxiety? Have they given up on their education? Well we haven’t..this session will offer you tips, tricks and strategies to help those students get back in the “game of school success!” We will also offer you hard copies of  behavior charts, behavior plans, incentives and more! For grade levels K-12. 

Stepping Into Math

Led by: Marilyn Stewart and Ardith Pugh

Using anchor charts and providing steps can help students solve math problems.  Giving students who struggle with math concepts various strategies can help them achieve confidence in math.  Following specific routines in class can help maximize time on task. Strategies for kindergarten through high school classrooms. 

Creating Our Science EcosySTEM 

Led by: Kim Williams and Sydney Hines

Join us to learn about our STEM approach to collaborative learning. We will discuss activities, notebooks, presentations, and living note-taking. We will also discuss our personal approach to teaching a standards based curriculum with an innovative schedule. Strategies for kindergarten through high school classrooms.
